Welcome to The Common Thread Mercantile. The shop opened in March, 2010 and it is located in an 1800’s Illinois community formerly known as Millburn. The address is 19020 W Grass Lake Road, Lake Villa, IL

The shop is studio-sized, quaint and rustic in a peaceful location surrounded by crab apple trees, a tree farm, an eight-sided gazebo with a butterfly garden, and an occasional visiting squirrel or bunny. It is a relaxing environment inside and out! Table space is usually available for you to spread out and do your cutting and piecing or to put your quilt sandwich together. We have a nice design wall for your use and a comfy Book Nook. Looking for ideas for a project? Pull up the chair to the antique barn plank table and take your time as you peruse (no purchase necessary).
Our focus area is quilting and heirloom fabric and laces and related classes and supplies. We also have vintage chenille bedspreads that we showcase on an antique brass bed. A consignment program is available for handmade items suitable to the theme of the shop and we showcase items made by our customers to learn from their techniques. In the future we will be doing online sales.
Do you need the services of a professional quilter? Cards are available for several longarm quilters in the area and a number of their beautiful samples are in the shop. Several offer introductory rates for an edge to edge design.
